The coverage is part of the Famine Early Warning System (FEWS) / Associates in Rural Development (ARD) African series.
The Zaire is associated with the Central region in Africa.
The data are to be used in modeling, targeting and demonstration projects. The data are also used in natural resource management, inventory, change analysis, policy making, environmental awareness and land use planning.
Procedures_Used: The administrative boundaries for Zaire were extracted from the MRPDA database using the ARC/INFO command RESELECT.
These country specific sub-national boundaries were then integrated into the DCW master country database using the ARC/INFO command UPDATE.
The country specific data set, containing all of the sub-national hierarchy, was extracted from the DCW master data set using the ARC/INFO command RESELECT and the third level administrative units were extracted from the country specific data set using the ARC/INFO command DISSOLVE.
A master data set, based on the Digital Chart of the World (DCW) PONET layer, was created. Burkina Faso, Mali, Ethiopia, and Eritrea are included in the master data set, however, these countries have international boundaries that have been revised.
The changes to Burkina Faso are: The Digital Chart of the World (DCW) International boundary was used for the International boundary for Burkina Faso with the only revisions being those listed below.
From : -2 degrees; 55 minutes; 8 seconds Longitude and : 13 degrees;37 minutes; 37 seconds Latitude
To : -0 degrees; 57 minutes; 41 seconds Longitude and : 14 degrees; 52 minutes; 14 seconds Latitude
AND...
From : 0 degrees; 3 minutes; 33 seconds Longitude and : 14 degrees; 58 minutes; 15 seconds Latitude
To : 0 degrees; 13 minutes; 55 seconds Longitude and : 14 degrees; 58 minutes; 15 seconds Latitude
These changes are defined by FEWS/ARD Washington, DC, USA.
The changes to Mali are: The Digital Chart of the World (DCW) International boundary was used for the International boundary for Mali with the only revisions being those listed below.
From : -2 degrees; 55 minutes; 8 seconds Longitude and : 13 degrees;37 minutes; 37 seconds Latitude
To : -0 degrees; 57 minutes; 41 seconds Longitude and : 14 degrees; 52 minutes; 14 seconds Latitude

To : 0 degrees; 13 minutes; 55 seconds Longitude and : 14 degrees; 58 minutes; 15 seconds Latitude
These changes are defined by FEWS/ARD Washington, DC, USA.
The changes to Ethiopia are: The Digital Chart of the World (DCW) International boundary was used for the International boundary for Ethiopia with the only revisions being those listed below.
From : 36 degrees; 34 minutes; 5 seconds Longitude and : 14 degrees; 14 minutes; 25 seconds Latitude
To : 42 degrees; 25 minutes; 22 seconds Longitude and : 12 degrees; 26 minutes; 53 seconds Latitude
These changes are defined by FEWS/ARD Washington, DC, USA.
The changes to Eritrea are: The Digital Chart of the World (DCW) International boundary was used for the International boundary of Eritrea with the only revisions being those listed below:
From : 36 degrees; 34 minutes; 5 seconds Longitude and : 14 degrees; 14 minutes; 25 seconds Latitude
To : 42 degrees; 25 minutes; 22 seconds Longitude and : 12 degrees; 26 minutes; 53 seconds Latitude
These changes are defined by FEWS/ARD Washington, DC, USA.
The international boundary for Zaire was extracted from an ARC/INFO LIBRARY created from the ARC/INFO version of the Digital Chart of the World (DCW) using the ARC/INFO tool LIBRARIAN.
Revisions: During ARC/INFO coverage development modifications were made to the digital files to generate a database with a common scale, uniform level of resolution, consistent coding scheme and comparable (standardized) measurement data.
Reviews_Applied_to_Data: Peer review, 03/96, FEWS/ARD Washington, D.C.
Digital line work and attribute data checked for discrepancies and approved for release to FEWS in-country and regional field representatives.

The DCW database was originally published in 1992. Data currency varies from place to place depending on the currency of the Operational Navigation Charts (ONC). Chart currency ranged from the mid 1960s to the early 1990s. Compilation dates for every ONC chart are included in the database.
The additional attributes were added in April of 1996 by the EROS Data Center (EDC).
Although these data have been processed successfully on a computer system at the EROS Data Center, no warranty expressed or implied is made by FEWS/ARD or USGS/EDC regarding the utility of the data on any other system, nor shall the act of distribution constitute any such warranty.
The Geological Survey will warrant the delivery of this product in computer-readable format, and will offer appropriate adjustment of credit when the product is determined unreadable by correctly adjusted computer input peripherals, or when the physical medium is delivered in damaged condition. This data set contains data that has copyright protection and is not for general (public) distribution.
To the best knowledge of USAID/FEWS and EDC the data compiled in this data set meets the codes and/or procedures established for completeness and consistency.
The absolute horizontal accuracy of the DCW for all features derived from Jet Navigation Charts (JNC) is 4270 meters (14006 feet) at 90% Circular Error.
